Striping tape diamond crosshatch design in red, orange, and white

How's about another pain-in-the-ass striping tape mani? This one may not be as bad as that right angle black and neon green one was, but I did both hands this time, so really you could say the expenditure of striping tape was about the same. I did this one back in mid-June: Why it takes me so long to post things sometimes, I don't know. Clearly I just need to quit my job and do my nails full time.

VIDEO TUTORIAL AT THE END OF THE POST!

Just redirect your attention from the pinky nail to any other nail, because I began this design on my pinky and had no idea what I was going for until after I'd already slapped on the red polish and removed the tape. I will have to try this look again soon, but next time going into it actually knowing what I want it to look like. Does anyone else do this? Just begin the nail arts and not know what will come of it and the result shows a clear pattern of improvement/clarity/sense from nail to nail?

Hello little Essie babies! You fit in my hand quite nicely.

If you have a keen eye you may have already seen this design on my page before... it's the backdrop to my Born Pretty Store 10% off code ad that floats around somewhere on the right hand blog window pane! On that note, you can buy striping tape from BPS and get 10% off with my code.

Martini, anyone?

1 MIN OR LESS VIDEO TUTORIAL:

Step by step:
  1. Base coat white (2 coats or however many required for full opacity).
  2. Apply quick dry topcoat and let fully dry (I always use Glisten & Glow's HK Girl).
  3. Apply striping tape 3 parallel pieces at a time, then 3 perpendicular pieces, forming essentially diamonds (or squares, depending on the angle you're doing them at) with the intersecting pieces of tape (better demonstrated in the video rather than in this explanation).
  4. Make sure all pieces of striping tape are firmly pressed down on the nail, along the sidewalls, and by the cuticle.
  5. Apply one generous (but not too thick) coat of red or orange over top of striping tape, covering all parts of the nail that is polished white, and immediately begin removing striping tape with tweezers (for precision). You'll have to remember what order you layed the striping tape down in as you'll be removing the tape in the reverse order.
  6. After you've unveiled your masterpiece inspect it for polish bleeds that went under the striping tape. This happened to me once in the video as you can see. Simply touch it up with a small brush and white polish.
  7. Take a new (or clean) detailer brush and fill in the corners of each 'diamond' on the outer stripes for each row of three parallel stripes with a small tick/line in the same colour as the polish chosen for that nail (orange, red). Again this is better demonstrated in the video rather than explained in text.
  8. Let the nail dry/sit for a couple of minutes to reduce streaking when you go to apply the final topcoat. I got impatient on some of the nails, evidently.
Polishes used:
- Essie 'Blanc' (white creme)
- Essie 'Meet me at sunset' (orange creme)
- Essie 'Forever yummy' (red creme)

    1. Aw thank you! Yes, not going to lie, it took a long time to do all 10 fingers!! But once I did my pinky I knew I had to see the look complete on all nails. Next time I'll do it with a gradient or something crazier colour wise :D
