August 2015 - full wall unit!

HOW DID I MAKE IT THO??? WATCH HERE:

Let's go through a short history of my nail polish shelf growth:

Up until June of 2013, I'd been storing my nail polish in a large fishing tackle box with a lid that was always open (because it could not be closed). Eventually my nail polish started exceeding the capacity of the tackle box and it was all over my desk. Something had to change.

In the summer of 2013, I decided to take charge of my nail polish inventory situation. I knew about the Helmer option, but I wanted to display my babies instead of shove them in a dark drawer. I didn't want to build a rack out of foam board and a glue gun either, as there's been one too many horror stories about the 'shelves' caving in and.... splat. The thought of my nail polish causing the shelves to cave in was like knowingly watching a horror movie that you know is going to give you nightmares all night. I want my nail polish to LIVE, not DIE.

To solve this dilemma I recruited my dear boyfriend to build me a nail polish rack, and I mean a REAL RACK, made of actual wood, fused together with wood glue and nails, then spray painted a matte black.

I picked up some cheap $3 black fabric from Fabricland and used spray adhesive glue to stick to a large particle board that would become the backbone of the nail rack. After affixing the backboard to the assembled shelves with nails, it really looked like something semi-professional. We mounted it to the wall of the office/den room with proper screws and drywall plugs, and I decorated it with some black glittery swirly decal things from Michael's craft store.

By October of 2014 I'd outgrown my one nail polish rack (growing from 350 polishes to 500), and for my birthday my boyfriend surprised me with a second rack, almost exactly the same as the first!

In August of 2015 shit really got out of control and we built two more shelves. By then I had over 1,000 polishes. Now that my entire office wall is covered in shelves, there's really no more room to store any nail polish. 'Tis why I'm saving for a bigger house ;)

  2. *happy* I love a spreadsheet!! I am sad it's not updated and I would add maybe two columns. The first is # coats to opacity, and the second is a general 1-10 rating. Not for the ones already on the list, but going forward when you add more. If you DO use an old polish you can update, but no need to stress out over perfectly useful spreadsheets.

  4. I did some math work... If you wanted to try all of your nail polishes (assuming you have about a 1000), you'd need over 2 years to do this if you tried a new polish every day, and about 20 years if you tried one every week. Of course, most humans have 10 finger nails, and 10 toenails, so you don't really need to take that long to try out all of your nail polishes. Yes, I have too much time on my hands.

  10. You are my hero! This is so rad. I need to get shelves. I'm using shoe boxes and Sephora Bags. If only I had a guy to build me some shelvery like yours! I'd be set for......that day! Ha! I love your collection. So many must haves and just all around gorgeousness!!! The spreadsheet is a great idea! Are your polishes insured? I would love to tally them up to see what you would need for coverage on a stash like that!
