You are getting sleepy! No, dizzy! No... turned on! Cause these nails are trippy af and bangin' with that holo top coat. It's back to classic simplynailogical this time, with these reciprocal gradient and nail vinyls nails!

C(h)ristmas nail art - scaled gradient tree and presents!
Merry (late) C(h)ristmas! How about a bunch of holo gradients? I went for a quadruple scaled gradient on my ring finger this time, for a Christmas tree effect! The other nails reminded me of abstract presents... somehow. Don't question me.

Neon scaled reciprocal pattern gradient nails... too many words
Welcome to this week's edition of the weekly nail art challenge (WNAC), which I co-host on Instagram along with lovely ladies Kristin of Lacquerstyle and Tracey of MissBellaTracey! The theme is gradient and the prompt is scaled! That means scaled gradient! Some of you (or none of you) may recall back in the day when I did this on my nails and called it a scaled gradient. Watch my very first scaled gradient tutorial here... you probably won't even think it was me.
There's tons of different possibilities, this is one of them! But in all honesty, it didn't turn out as it looked in my head. But that doesn't mean I wasn't going to share it with you😆
Technically one might call this a scaled reciprocal chevron patterned gradient and... it's just as confusing to do as it looks.

How NOT to do complicated gradient nails
Did you know I was human? Yes, that's right, I have tons of nail fails too! I get the feeling that most nail artists don't show you when they f up, even during a nail art tutorial that turned out great (those clips got cut on the editing room floor, as they say). And even when the final end result is complete and a major fail, most nail artists just delete those pics (or don't take any at all) and pretend like it never happened. NOT ME!
In today's tutorial I show you how I attempted a more "complicated" layered gradient (reciprocal returning gradient would be the proper term), and where I messed up at multiple points along the way. This is the actual TRUTH OF DOING NAIL ART people! I'm using this "nail fail" for this week's weekly nail art challenge (WNAC) manis I co-host the WNAC on Instagram along with lovely ladies Kristin of Lacquerstyle and Tracey of MissBellaTracey - geometric gradient!

OOOHHH CANADAAAAA nails
Our home and native laaaaandddd.... Deux fois trompwhateverrrr.....
If you forgot, here's a reminder that I'm Canadian, eh? Happy Canada day on July 1st to all my fellow maple-syrup loving tree-hugging friends! Here's a different take on the reciprocal gradient - a gradient leaf in a gradient flag! I used maple leaf nail vinyls from Twinkled T to create this look! And you can use my code SIMPLY for 10% off your order from Twinkled T - yes, even if you're not Canadian ;)

Gradientception time: Scaled reciprocal gradient with black and holos!
GRADIENTCEPTION MUAHHAHAHA. Okay so at first you probably think it's just a checkerboard *whatever, yawn*, but look CLOSER! Yes, thats right, if you're thinking what I'm thinking, that's a SCALED RECIPROCAL GRADIENT say whhhhhaaaaat. So I did a scaled reciprocal gradient back in my neon happy days, and this is my second attempt and I tried a different pattern using the same logic/technique! The logic is basically insanity and the technique is essentially spending 8 hours doing your nails.
I used the infamous Color Club holos I got from Live Love Polish - their selection of these is unreal!!! HOLOSS 4 LIFE.

It's a dark Valentine's Day... but a happy scaled gradient
This week's weekly nail art challenge (co-hosted by Kristin of Lacquerstyle and Tracey of @missbellatracey on Instagram) is Valentine's Day! And of course I had to hijack it and make a dark Valentine's Day/anti-Valentine's Day/evil Valentine's Day or whatever negative rendition of V-Day you see fit 'cause I'm a rebel. Plus seeing bleeding black and red evil hearts on mah nails makes me happy!!

Nude-toned edgy holo reciprocal-V gradient
Here's an edgy but simple enough look I did in early November and I think it'd be perfectly suited for New Year's nails! Striking, simple and holo - all necessary to ring in the new year! This reciprocal gradient (see my Gradient Guide for more on terminology and variations) was inspired by Mélanie of iparallaxe's silver and black holo version, who was inspired by @supinaileuse on Instagram. Mélanie is an amazing French blogger and her photography - especially holo photography - is just to die for.
I used two new Colors by Llarowe polishes to me that I've lusted over for a long time now, Blonde Ambition and Final Fantasy. Together they could be Final Ambition? Blonde Fantasy? Whoa, okay. Nevermind.

Neon rainbow reciprocal scaled gradient
I'm back to my old ways with this mind-bending gradient business! I've been doing a lot of holo glitter looks these days, partially because I'm on a glitter kick and partially because I've been given a lot of glitter and holo polishes recently. If you're not already a nail blogger of sorts then you may not know that when polishes are provided to you, you must make use of them as agreed upon so the generous companies who provided them get the product showcasing their unique creations deserve. But now back to what one of my favourite things to do ever is, come up with crazy gradient designs, notably the scaled gradient and the reciprocal gradient! Check out my Gradient Guide for more on these concepts.

Edgy purple and black holo fishnet gradient combo
Nails can be sexy too okay. This mani is ready for a scandalous night on the town... either that or I couldn't decide between a reciprocal gradient or basic gradient with black overlay. Nail blogger problems, I suppose, but at least my nails are sexy. Featuring three glorious A England polishes - a very unique blend they are, their holos are more subtle but have oh so much depth - and fishnet nail shields from Love, Angeline.

Fall-toned holo reciprocal X round gradient
... title is a mouthfull, once again. Meghan of Will Paint Nails for Food featured some fall nail arts on her blog today, and I'm happy to say she thought mine was worth including! Meghan is known for her detailed nail arts (and she actually paints her nails unlike me who just tends to blend colours all over the place), so be sure to go check her out! My submission was maybe a bit of a stretch from fall-inspired, but I got the colour scheme right cause I used three new holos from ILNP's fall collection, so, yeah.

Holo and creme intricate reciprocal gradient with striping tape
Gradient + holo + striping tape = meeeee! I had some fun with this one, that's for sure. Thanks to Live Love Polish, a new online polish retailer, I got to try out one of the infamous Color Club holographic hues (Kismet) along with a teal China Glaze creme I've been lusting over (Shower Together - what a name btw).

Holo tribal reciprocal gradient featuring the Cirque burlesque collection
I realize this is a busy-looking mani but I COULDN'T HELP MYSELF - I want all the holos on all my nails, all the time. So sue me. Featuring the entire Cirque Colors Burlesque Collection (swatched and reviewed here), I made every nail a reciprocal gradient using tribal chevron nail shields from Love, Angeline.

Triangle reciprocal gradient and a new nail polish shop
A reciprocal gradient?! How boring! Nah, just kidding, it's not that boring, but I've used just two nail polishes in this mani as opposed to the 12 polishes used in my last quadruple scaled gradient. Sometimes we should just appreciate the beauty of a couple nail polishes instead of going all out in polish porn as I am occasionally guilty of (sorry, not sorry?).
Today I've got a new take on the reciprocal gradient look but instead of using striping tape I've used triangle directional arrow nail shields from Love, Angeline to serve as a nail vinyl/stencil. Featured are two new polishes I've added to my collection thanks to the ladies over at Live Love Polish, which is a new online-based nail polish store which ships internationally from the U.S. (and quickly, too!). They carry some of the core basics every nail polish addict needs, such as holographic Color Club's or China Glaze creme galore, as well as some up-and-coming nail polish brands like UNT or Tenoverten.

Turquoise & green returning reciprocal chevron gradient
Another mind bender from the Gradient Guide, this time a new and improved version of the grey and white returning reciprocal chevron gradient I did a few months ago. This look can be done with any colour combo your heart desires! I went with a turquoise and green theme, holding onto summer as long as I can. Chevron mini nail vinyls are from Nailvinyls.com.
